ABOUT PARKINSONS DISEASE Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurological disease in Australia after dementia and affects 70, 000 individuals in Australia alone. The average diagnosis is at 65 years of age, however it is possible to occur in the younger. It is described as a neurodegenerative condition which is both progressive and degenerative in nature and affects a person’s ability to control their own body movements. Parkinson’s is the result of degeneration of nerve cells in an area of the brain called the substantia niagra. As a result of this degeneration there is an inability to produce dopamine which is what brings about the symptoms of the disease. Clinically the symptoms of Parkinson's don't arise until after approximately 50-70% of the nerve cells have been damaged. The underlying causal factor of Parkinson’s disease is unknown but it thought to be multifactorial, with a combination of genetic and environmental toxin exposure.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include: Motor Symptoms
  • Slowed movement (Bradykinesia)
  • Rigid muscles
  • Resting tremor- a tremor or shaking which usual begins in the hands or fingers.
  • Posture may be stooped and balance can be affected
  • Gait problems- such as freezing or shuffling when walking and a decreased arm swing
  • Reduced facial expression known as masking
Non-Motor Symptoms
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Loss of sense of smell
  • Constipation
  • Speech can decrease in sound and develop a hoarse quality
  • Slowness of movement can affect swallowing movements such as chewing and biting
  • Your handwriting may become smaller
  • Some vision difficulties may develop as a result of the decrease in dopamine
Treatment for Parkinson's disease consists of medications directed at increasing dopamine levels in the brain, stimulating areas of the brain dopamine works or blocking chemicals that affect dopamine levels. These are usually prescribed under the watchful eye of a neurologist. HOW WE CAN HELP RELIEVE SOME OF YOUR SYMPTOMS Complimentary treatments can also be helpful in improving quality of life of those with Parkinson’s. This includes massage and acupuncture which assists in some of the symptoms caused by the muscles rigidity, gait problems and tremors the patient experiences. Low level laser therapy is another treatment we do at Lakeside Laser showing significant results in a wide range of neurodegenerative conditions including Parkinson’s. The laser has been shown to be effective in increasing neuro transmissions for the dopamine cells in the brain. With time, it is believed that this can lead to improved neuronal function for Parkinson's patients although further research is required. The experienced and knowledgeable technicians here at Lakeside Laser fortunately offer all the complimentary treatments mentioned above.
