How to treat tension-type headaches

Individuals suffering from tension-type headaches should first figure out the possible cause of the headache and try to fix it. For example, if a person isn’t having sufficient sleep recently, he or she should get rid of the habit of sleeping late to make sure that they have enough sleep. Furthermore, they can consume some over-the-counter (OTC) pain medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin to get temporary relief of the headache, however, it is not recommended to overuse OTC medication as prolonged usage of OTC drugs will cause an individual to be accustomed to the medication and will experience pain when the drugs wear off.

Tension-type headache sufferer can choose to consult health professionals for treatments such as:

Stress management classes – assist with handling stress and relieve tension.

Biofeedback – a relaxation technique for pain and stress management.

Cognitive behavioural therapy – a talk therapy that helps patients to recognise situations that cause them stress, anxiety and tension.

Acupuncture – an alternative therapy that reduces stress and tension by applying fine needles to specific areas of body.

Low Lever Laser Therapy – a therapy that applies cold laser/ low level laser onto the primary point of injury and promote healing of that area to relieve headache.

Low Lever Laser Therapy in the usefulness of headaches

Low lever laser therapy, also known as cold laser therapy, is a treatment method that is natural, effective and maybe beneficial for tension-type headache. It works by having the laser placed over the primary point of injury that causes the headache and relieves the  pain. In addition, cold laser therapy will stimulate the release of natural serotonin and endogenous opioids in the body that will promote natural pain relief.

In most cases, patients will get some improvements within a couple of weeks where the pain will reduce and occur less often, however, the treatment usually last for 2 to 3 months in order to completely relieve tension-type headache.
