A study done by Alexander Wunsch and Karsten Matuschka, 2014 determined the efficacy of Red and near-infrared light treatment in patient satisfaction, reduction of fine line, wrinkles, skin roughness and intradermal collagen density increase. The objective of this study was to investigate the safety and effectiveness of two light sources when applied to large and full body areas. Polychromatic and non-thermal Photobiomodulation (PBM) were provided to improve skin feeling and appearance. In this randomized, controlled study there was a total of 136 volunteers who participated. The results showed that the treated subjects experienced “significantly improved skin complexion and skin feeling, profilometrically assessed skin roughness and ultrasonographically measured collagen density”. Following treatments there was blinded clinical evaluation of before and after photographs that confirmed substantial improvement when comparing the intervention and control groups.

In summary the study demonstrated that broadband polychromatic PBM showed no advantage over the red-light-only spectrum. However, both novel light sources that have not previously been used for PBM have demonstrated to be successful, effective and safe for skin rejuvenation and intradermal collagen increase when compared with controls.
