Bursitis/ pain on the side of the hip refers to inflammation of the Bursa, a fluid filled sac that functions to reduce the amount of friction between joints and tissues throughout the body. It’s generally caused by trauma to the area and commonly associated with overuse/too much pressure on the affected body region.

Trochanteric bursitis (hip pain) is associated with inflammation of the trochanter, located adjacent to the pelvis/ hip bone on the outside aspect of the upper thigh. Symptoms arising from trochanteric bursitis involve localised lateral hip pain (pain on the outside of the hip) commonly associated with a minor limp and difficulty sleeping on the involved side.

Common causes include:

  • Low Back Pain
  • Leg length inequality
  • Arthritic conditions
  • Neurogenic conditions
  • Surgery
  • Fall on bumps onto outside of hip
  • Rolling in of the feet / loss of arch support
Low level/cold laser therapy has been found to be effective in the management of trochanteric bursitis. T

he cold laser therapy initiates an effect upon swelling and tenderness of joints/tissues by improving the circulation of blood, nutrients and oxygen around the affected area for a faster healing time.

It’s a technique used in many medical professions and is a substantially new innovative treatment option. The treatment is painless and although the affects aren’t immediate, treatment of conditions are extremely quick. T

reatment of trochanteric bursitis via the cold laser therapy/low level laser therapy generally consists of no less than 15 treatments for the maximum impact with sessions lasting up to 20 minutes with 5 minutes on each section affected. It’s recommended that the patient receives care daily to gain the maximum benefit from the treatment to ensure the bursitis doesn’t recur.
